Pedalling into summer

Now that the weather is somewhat warmer, it’s a pleasure to get out on my bike and go for a ride, especially through the Sussex Nature Trail.

Early in the morning, it’s very quiet in there. The only sounds around are birds tweeting and, if the water is high enough, the sound of it running over the rocks. At that time of day there are only a few other souls out and about taking a walk, exercising their dogs or occasionally other cyclists.

I had to stop periodically and enjoy the sounds (lack of) and scents. The sweet smell of pine and flowers, the rich earthy smells emanating from the moist undergrowth.

All of the plants from ferns to flowers seemed to be enjoying a break in the cold, wet weather we had been experiencing up until a couple of days ago. There were thousands of these pretty purple and white flowers lining the trail.

There’s an entire field of pupils reaching up to the sun.

And bees! Lots and lots of fuzzy-bottomed bumble bees flitting from flower to flower, undisturbed by my presence. They are so cute.

Those who share the trail early in the morning are a friendly bunch, often stopping to chat, waving or sending out a quick “good morning” greeting as we pass each other.

When we first moved to our current location almost 14 years ago, there was a large beaver dam at the foot of the hill. A few years ago someone decided that it and the resident family of beavers had to go. It was heartbreaking to see the dam destroyed and the beavers either trapped or killed. For many years there was no sign of them. Then this spring they came back. They’ve re-built their dam and lodge, providing a reservoir of water not to mention the cheery sound of the excess flowing over the top. I sincerely hope those who felt the need to destroy them the last time won’t do it again. In the meantime, welcome to the neighbourhood!
