Today is New Brunswick Day – a provincial holiday in the middle of summer created to a) celebrate our beautiful province, and b) give people a long weekend in the middle of the season. Regardless, taking time to celebrate my home province makes me happy.
A long time ago our provincial slogan was “The Picture Province”. Somewhere along the line, some marketing guru decided that it was no longer catchy enough and so began a series of variations, most recently “Always Inviting”. That slogan, at least, makes sense. We are known for our welcoming demeanour and hospitality. There once was one that said “Be In This Place” – say what?

We’re in the midst of the summer season and the black/brown-eyed Susans are blooming. While I was out bicycling this morning I noticed, in the field across the road from our house, some deer grazing including at least one of this year’s fawns. They were too far away for my short lens to really capture them, but what amazed me was the fact that they totally ignored me and my bike stopped at the edge of the field.

I enjoy the seasons (other than winter) when I can get outside with my camera and see what there is to see. This morning, just after sunrise, I set out on my biked and pedalled through the Sussex Walking Trail (bikes are allowed). At that hour there are few other users. I stopped by the ‘back pond’ and had a conversation with Kermit the Frog. Hiding under the water at the edge of the pond, he just said “ribbit, here’s looking at you!”

Moving on I noticed a number of signs that summer is waning. The tamarack trees are in full splendour right now.

And at home, the hosta plants are beginning to droop and their flowers are just about finished.

The last lilac is lining to the bush.

It’s still summer, but there are signs of autumn. The leaves on my burning bush are turning red already and when I was out and about on the trail this morning I noticed a few others making that change as well.

The birds are looking forward to feasting on the choke cherries and we’re looking forward to our slowly ripening cherry tomatoes. Looks like a bumper crop!

Summer is short and definitely waning. Although the air is still warm and humid (there’s a torrential rainstorm on its way), there is a bit of “fall feeling” out there too. Get out and enjoy the season while you can.
Meanwhile, the begonias are thriving as are the petunias!

So, let’s celebrate our Picture Province. Happy New Brunswick Day!
