While the weather permits, I really enjoy taking my bike out for a ride. Generally, I pedal down the hill to the Sussex Nature Trail, through its winding paths and then around the Princess Louise Park Show Centre before heading home. At this time of year, it’s definitely refreshing and it’s nice to watch the trees donning their autumn wardrobes.

Trout Creek runs adjacent to the Trail and the scenery surrounding it changes daily. Every time I pass by there’s more colour to see – even in just the last two days.

Sometimes it’s a single leaf falling between the tree branches.

Sometimes it’s an entire run of sumacs rapidly switching their garments for fall.

And other times, it’s a stand of mixed trees, the hardwoods becoming the stars of the group.

The not so long, but winding, road (er, path) through the Trail. It’s fun to ride and I often meet some lovely people out strolling along with their friends or kids or walking their dogs.

I try to ride early in the morning to avoid traffic – both on the busy roads and streets, and more people using the Trails. As our days grow markedly shorter, however, that time frame is getting later every day.

I had to stop by a disintegrating tree stump at the side of the trail when I saw this assortment of fungi. I don’t know one from another but they are intricate and beautiful to look at. I wished I’d had a macro lens with me for this set.

Meanwhile, the large hayfields around our home have been harvested at least twice this year. Now they’ve been fertilized and are getting ready to rest for the next growing season. It’s been tough for farmers due to the massive amounts of rain we’ve had since late spring – saturating fields and making it very difficult to get heavy tractors and other equipment onto them.

The huge wheels tended to sink into the ground leaving lengthy ‘divots’ where they passed by the lowest sodden parts of the fields.

Meanwhile, back in the house, Lucy is content to “own” Harley’s dog bed. It’s soft, warm and perfect for curling up in for a nap or three. Harley is less than impressed.
Autumn is my favourite season of all. The air is usually crisp and clean; the sky is clear and the fall foliage is truly lovely. If you can, get out and enjoy it!
