Is it their colour? Or perhaps the myth that cardinals are messengers from departed souls? Regardless, these beautiful but incredibly shy birds are strongly associated with the season.
In the last eighteen months, our family has suffered tremendous losses. First was Joel’s beautiful daughter, Samantha. Next, my handsome son, David followed a week later by my sister, Dawn. “They” say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. At this point, we should be able to benchpress a ton at least!
Our town is brilliantly lit for the season. After a lovely meal at Sushi Jo’s for our Christmas Eve celebration, we took a drive around town to admire the beautiful lights on the streets, businesses and homes. The displays were lovely and it was a nice thing to do.
Just after we got home, a friend (#DawnStoddard) dropped in with a small and very timely gift – a new ornament for our small tree.
The message paired well with another ornament that my friend #HettySmyth had given us a few days ago.
Are we sensing a theme here? I even wore a cozy nightgown last night decorated with, you guessed it, cardinals.
In all the years we’ve lived in our current home, I’d never seen a cardinal in our yard until last year, after Samantha died. This season I hadn’t seen any until recently when he began visiting again. Perhaps there’s something to the myth. Regardless, I choose to enjoy the idea and the sight of those cheery red birds brings me peace and joy every time I see them.
Our Christmas this year is a tribute to our kids – so loved, and gone. Sushi was one of David’s favourite treats so it seemed appropriate to enjoy some last night. Today we’ll continue the theme by having his favourite supper – homemade macaroni and cheese. For dessert, we’ll enjoy Samantha’s favourite – pumpkin pie and whipped cream.
Both were well loved. Both are deeply missed. Neither will ever be forgotten as long as we draw breath.
