Snowy morning on the deck

January is winding down and today Mother Nature decided to Tass a bit of snow our way. It would be lovely – except for the north-east wind. Our local birds are gobbling food from our feeders – a suet block, some wild bird seed and some sunflower seeds.

It amazes me how the various types of birds wait their turn. This cardinal sat in the bushes for quite a while waiting until the coast was clear to dart in, grab some sunflower seeds, and quickly retreat to the buses again.

As soon as he was out of the way, a herd of chickadees (New Brunswick’s official bird, by the way) descended on the feeder to grab their share.

A crew of these little guys got in on the action too.

Until today I had never noticed that this type of bird had red feathers under its tail. This little guy decided to unload (enlarge the photo on the left to see what I mean) before heading to the suet block for a snack!

Meanwhile, the chickadees were squabbling over the sunflower seeds.

While the chickadees were busy, this little fellow headed to the wild birdseed feeder and snagged some goodies!

There’s an entire ‘herd’ of Blue Jays that hang out here as well, but they had already filled their beaks and seemed content to sit in the trees and watch everyone else for the time being. I’m sure they’ll be back eventually.

The cardinal was keeping a close eye on the feeder, waiting for the little guys to vacate before swooping in for another beakful of sunflower seeds.

Needless to say, these avian friends are keeping us (and the indoor cat, who’s crouched on the windowsill) amused on a nippy winter morning.
