Summer’s End in Sussex

It’s the last Saturday of summer and here in our Town of Sussex there is still so much to do!

Foliage is getting decked out in its autumn shades and leaves are falling to the ground in the brisk NE wind. Meanwhile, the Agricultural Museum of New Brunswick is hosting its annual Harvest Days Festival. The event includes numerous livestock displays, horse-drawn wagon rides around the park, craft displays, and demonstrations of how things ‘used to be done’ in the ‘olden days’. There was an old planer/sawmill and a tractor-driven lathe creating what looked like it might be a bedpost. An old square bale-making machine turned loose hay into nice, tight bales.

On the other side of the parking lot there was an end-of-season baseball game underway.

Down the street at the Princess Louise Park Show Centre the annual Kings Country Fun Horse Show was underway.

All of the events were well attended, with those at the horse show camping on-site for the weekend.

Sturdy flowers blossomed through cracks in the concrete, apparently oblivious to the changing of the season.

But, tomorrow it will be officially autumn – a time to enjoy the harvest of the summer’s hard work in the gardens and fields, crisp days and perhaps an evening by the fire when it’s too cool for comfort. People will shelve their sandals in favour of closed footwear and socks, and sweaters will be worn to ward off the chill, especially in the morning. It’s a lovely time of year with warm-ish summer days and cool nights for sleeping.

Welcome autumn with all of it’s colourful glory!

And farewell to summer until next year.
