The first day os spring dawned clear and sunny. The whole area seemed to perk up with the knowledge that the dreary winter days were almost over. Here in the Maritimes, it’s easy to be fooled into thinking the cold and snow is all done – but there may be a bit more over the next few weeks. Even so, it felt like everyone I encountered had a bit of bounce in their step in anticipation of the seasons coming and bringing more warmth and sunshine.
I headed over to the Town of Sussex’s Nature Walkway trail system and walked up to check “our” trees. The path was a tad soggy, but when I got up to the top of the hill, I was able to walk around easily. The snow is gone up there – at least for now. I was delighted to find that the trees we had planted in memory of my son, David, and Joel’s daughter, Samantha, had survived the winter and had buds bursting out getting ready for the next growth spurt.

Their memories live on and as the trees grow taller and more lush, people and animals will be able to shelter under their branches from the rains or harsh heat and sun of summer. It’s a good legacy for two wonderful people that are gone but never forgotten and always loved.
Since it was such a beautiful day I decided to continue on down the path a ways. The ‘duck pond’ is partially thawed with “ice islands” dotting the water’s surface while tree branches were reflected in the open water areas.

As I rounded the corner, I checked the footing along the path that meanders through the woods along the shore of the pond. Although clear of snow, it did look wet and soft so, in deference to my not-waterproof sneakers, I decided to call it quits there and return home. It was a lovely way to celebrate the changing of the seasons! Happy spring everyone!
