The sun is deceptively shining brightly luring the unsuspecting photographer to don a jacket, grab her camera and head outside.

Against the bright blue sky, highlighted by the sun, buds on the white lilac tree are getting ready to burst forth.


At ground level if you look closely there are green things beginning to show up – scrawny blades of grass and some sort of ground cover breaking through the dried thatch from the winter.


The wind delivered a couple of shriveled maple leaves to remind me that it’s not growing season yet – but it will come eventually.


The heads of my black eyed susans have been feeding birds and wee bugs all winter. Soon they’ll be replaced with fresh growth, but not yet. There are still some chilly days ahead when what’s left of them will still nourish whatever needs it.

That tree was small when we first moved here but it has grown substantially. In summer it’s vast canopy of leaves helps to cool that end of the house from the relentless sun.
Here in the “Merry Times” of Canada, the weather at this time of year is fickle and I wouldn’t want to bet that there won’t be more snow falling before Old Man Winter totally gives way to Spring and departs for a few months to allow us to enjoy warmth and sunshine.
