Finding Joy in Nature and Family: A Recent BC Adventure

A lot has happened at home, across the country and around the world in the last couple of weeks. So much of it is anxiety inducing that it’s best not to spend too much time focussing on it. Instead, let’s look at some positive adventures.

I spent a week in BC, in and around the Vancouver / Lower Mainland area, visiting friends. One day we drove to White Rock. It’s a quaint town near the border to the USA. We bought some yummy ice cream in one of the many tiny shops along the shore and then strolled the long wharf. Opulent houses were stacked like cordwood above the beach area, each vying for the best view.

It was a lovely, warm day for an outing and you can see Vancouver Island in the distance.

Another day saw us wandering around English Bay along the sea wall. Ian and Elizabeth went on a longer stroll while I was content to ‘people watch’ from a bench overlooking the bay. Some people actually swam in the murky, cold water of the bay while huge cargo ships sliced through the channels.

I had a chance for a short visit with my son’s family. Both his son and daughter are doing well in school and have one more year to go before graduation. Neither said much about plans beyond that time, but I suspect that’s very normal with teens these days. In some ways, there are too many options out there. In other ways, making life choices at 17 doesn’t make a lot of sense either.

I was delighted to meet one of David’s friends, a work colleague and close friend from his days working on the Arrow TV show. She very kindly brought a bouquet of tulips to our first meeting. How did she know that yellow was my favourite? We hit it off right away! We spent an enjoyable hour in a coffee shop telling tales of David’s exploits – me from his childhood, her from their work together.

And, I had a chance to spend a little time with Andrew and Linda (Ian’s brother and his wife) catching up on decades of news, not the least of which included photos of their delightful new grandaughter.

After the redeye flight home, it took a couple of days to recover and then I headed out for a ride on my bike. Fresh air, sunshine and a trek through wooded trails does much to soothe the soul.

Ferns were unfurling beside the trail and I was delighted to see that the trees planted in honour of both David and Samantha survived the winter and were alive with flowers for new growth this year.

And now, back to my regularly scheduled programming. The days are longer, the sun is stronger and there is more warmth in the air making it a pleasure to get outside and enjoy it all.
