Connecting with Nature: The Beauty of Spring Days

After perusing the endless news streams from south of the 49th parallel, I decided it was time time to give my beleaguered brain a rest. Yesterday I enjoyed watching, behind the scenes, at the annual Hampton Riding Centre Hunter-Jumper horse show. Today I’m just going to spend my time “going with the flow”.

Stepping out the back door, the first thing that happens is that the sweet smell of lilacs, from the now-huge bush we share with our neighbour, assaults your senses. It literally forces you to slow down, breathe deeply and enjoy the moment.

Later on I shall head out to have coffee with a friend and then, perhaps, drop in to whatever show is going on at the Princess Louise Park Show Centre. Another visit with another friend and then home to bury my face in a book. Even retired people need a ‘day off’ sometimes!

The choke cherry flowers are done blooming now and getting busy creating berries to feed the birds in the late summer/fall. The shrubs along our lot line are alive with birds of all types nesting and feeding on whatever they can find. We have three hummingbirds that visit our feeders fairly regularly too. It gives me immeasurable pleasure to watch their antics as they vie for the best spot!

Enjoy the day. The heavy rain and brutal, tree-bending, wind is over now so get out and enjoy that wonderful after-rain smell called “petrichor”. It soothes the senses.
