On August 25, 2024, I was busy getting ready to host David’s Celebration of Life party.
That afternoon, I was thrilled to greet and be supported by so many family members, friends of mine and friends of David’s – some going back to his childhood days (you know who you are, right Jill?). Many shared memories and stories of time spent with him and how much he was truly loved by them. They warmed my grieving heart with their kindness.
He was born and grew up in New Brunswick. He lived in Vancouver, BC, until his death on October 9, 2023. Between those times, he travelled the world and developed many deep and abiding friendships that survived time and distance.
Friends from far away who were unable to attend in person sent lovely letters of condolence filled with memories of good times and escapades they got into together.
For those unable to attend or who may not have seen the video captured on the day, I’ll attach a YouTube link. My friend Alison captured video snippets for me. I’ll also attach a second YouTube link to the video of his life’s highlights that played on the screen in the room for those who cared to watch and reminisce.
I’m very grateful to those who helped me pull this all together and who contributed their talents to the success of the day. I think David would have enjoyed the party! His father, Ian McLean (Elizabeth), travelled from Vancouver to join in the event, and his stepfather, Dan Flanagan (Joanne), was there too – both of whom had tremendous impact on the man he became. My husband, Joel, was there providing quiet support through the whole process.
I miss my son terribly, and I will carry him in my heart until I draw my last breath. But with time, the edges of the pain have softened a bit, helped with a year of therapy and participation in a grief recovery group through CMHANB.
I hope his wife, Linnea, and children, Mattias and Isla, have fond memories as well. I know many of his friends from all of the stages of his 50 years of life do as well.

Rest easy and fly free, David. You were, and are, loved!
