The challenge was issued; eight intrepid athletes, a score keeper and a judge responded. They gathered on the shore of Washademoak Lake for a tournament to end all tournaments. Horse shoes (of the draft horse variety) went flying in all directions. Sometimes they landed in the pit. Sometimes they ventured into the bushes. Other times, they landed flat on the grass or bounced across the pit to land behind or beside it.
Each athlete demonstrated his or her unique horseshoe tossing style, accompanied by shouts of “keep it flat” from the organizer of the competition (who failed to follow his own advice). Spectators cheered.

After the first round, including four teams, two teams were eliminated. The remaining two teams fought it out to the end.
The potluck meal, including the hosts’ BBQ’d chicken, was a success. No one went home hungry (including the dog). It was a wonderful way to celebrate the nominal end of summer with friends, good food and a few beverages.
