The town of Sussex, NB, may be small in size, but it is bursting with activity. I drove down to the local recreational area (Princess Louise Park) and found three events happening.
Inside the indoor arena at the Show Centre, there was a barrel racing competition taking place. Scoring is based on speed and not knocking any barrels over.

The warm-up was taking place in the outdoor area surrounded by campers for the folks staying for the weekend.

It was a cool, almost-autumn morning, and the wind was strong, stirring up the dust.
Meanwhile, in the large outdoor arena, a unique race was underway. Normally, in barrel racing, there’s one competitor in the ring doing the cloverleaf pattern around 3 barrels. In this one, two competitors were in the ring racing both against the clock AND against each other.

Intense, or what?
Meanwhile, a crowd was gathered by the in-gate, either waiting for this class or the next, with an atmosphere of camaraderie among the competitors.

Next door, as part of the NB Agricultural Museum’s Harvest Days celebrations, people were enjoying wagon rides pulled by a pair of Percherons and watching demonstrations of old-tyme farming methods like threshing hay onto a wagon.

It’s a small town in size, but thriving with lots to do at any given time.
