Perfect Autumn Afternoon

After tackling some tedious domestic chores, I decided it was time to grab my camera and go for a walk. With temperatures in the low 20s and a light breeze blowing, I headed down my favourite rural sideroad, Mulberry Lane.

It’s a short, dead-end cul-de-sac with farmers’ fields on either side. Coming toward me was a lone runner. She seemed to be enjoying the day as she huffed and puffed by me.

Our area has been experiencing an extended drought, which is rare for the Maritimes. Those with wells have been getting very nervous, and farmers have been devastated by low-yielding crops. These corn fields have few cobs on the stalks and turned a dry golden colour weeks ago. Normally, they’d have been harvested by now, but I’m guessing that they’ll simply plow the stalks into the ground for fertilizer.

They do, however, make a lovely foreground for the burst of autumn foliage long the roadway in the background.

Back in our yard, our Flaming Bush is working up to an awesome display for the season.

Autumn is my favourite season – cool, sunny, crisp mornings, warm afternoons and cozy evenings. Mother Nature is encouraging us to settle down for the season to follow. I do hope, however, that she’ll provide enough rainfall before things freeze up to top up people’s wells and hydrate the soil for the next growing season.
