It’s Christmas Eve. For some, the celebrations are like a Hallmark Christmas card or movie. Some have beautifully decorated homes and multiple generations of family arriving to share in the holidays.
For others, the excessive cheeriness can be overwhelming if they let it. Many people are alone with no family to celebrate with. Some have experienced losses, and the pain of those losses is amplified by the “wonderful life” vignettes we see everywhere.
I choose to try to strike a balance. I love the decorations, the lights and most of the music. Baking treats that we’ll eat throughout the season gives me pleasure (even if I’ll need a gym membership in the new year to get rid of the evidence of my over-indulgences). Sharing visits with friends, a cup of coffee or even a small gift exchange lightens my heart.

Since we don’t have grandchildren of our own nearby to spoil and hug this season, we are fortunate to have a ‘surrogate family”. For years now, the Smyths have adopted me as an extra grandmother – an honour I don’t take lightly. Including me in their holidays and remembering major occasions brings me joy. These beautiful roses are this year’s gift from them and are perfect for the season – bright and cheerful. They will look lovely on our table tomorrow as we dive into the feast of the day!

Waste not want not. This tangy orange liqueur adds a sweet tang to my cranberry sauce – especially if you have a sip as well.
After supper tonight, we’re going to head out to view the Christmas lights around town. It’s becoming an annual tradition for us and one that adds to the pleasure of the season.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas (or whatever you celebrate) and a Happy and Healthy New Year!
