The In-Between Time

The hustle of days, even weeks, of preparation for the “Big Day” is done. The meal has been cooked and consumed. Gifts have been presented, opened and appreciated. And now?

Now, it is a time for peace.

On Christmas Eve, Joel and I took a drive around the town to see what some of the decorations looked like. They were quite lovely. There’s a house not far from our home that looked like a Hallmark Christmas card – tastefully decorated with only some simple wreaths and garlands, and warm lights that glowed on a nippy evening.

Downtown, a major intersection at the corner of Main and Queen streets sported a colourful display of tree branches lit for the season.

Around the corner, street light poles were wrapped in colourful garlands, wreaths and lights brightening what would otherwise be a dull, dark winter evening.

Town hall was awash with projected lights and a beautiful, tall Christmas tree out front for all to enjoy.

Everywhere we looked there were displays of lights and greenery brightening the night. After New Year’s many people turn off or take down their displays. It’s too bad because winter is long, dark and cold and those cheery lights could brighten the season well beyond the designated day.

Now, we are between Christmas and New Year’s. It’s Boxing Day, and most people are relaxing and recovering from yesterday’s indulgence. Other than going out for a walk in a while, that’s my plan too. Curl up with the cat and dog and read, or listen to music, or sleep – or perhaps all of those things. There’s about an inch of snow on rooftops and covering yards and gardens – a postcard look to the season.

From our house to yours, we wish everyone peace, happiness and a safe, happy and healthy New Year.
