Road trippin’ down memory lane

Yesterday, my friend Mary and I went for a drive. We had no particular destination in mind and we ended up crawling along the Lower Norton Shore Road on the Kingston Peninsula. It runs adjacent to the Kennebecasis River and overlooks Darlings Island on the other side.

Despite being a mostly grey and drizzly day, it was nice to get out and stroll along the edge of the road to see what there was to see. On our first stop I spotted a brave kayaker out paddling across the river.

MANY years ago I and my family lived on that road, not far from where these photos were made. It looks a lot different now than it did then; much more development and the road, that ALWAYS flooded in the spring, has been raised up and bolstered with big rocks to keep the river at bay.

As a teenager, my son, David, used to terrify me by climbing up this rock face known as “Red Rock” (you can see why).

The river has passed its spring peak although it’s a bit high over the marsh grass right now due to the recent three days of rain.

An old barn on the far side, perched on Darlings Island, caught my eye with its red roof. When we lived on “the shore”, our house was high on the hill above the road and the river. Our view extended from Perry Point almost to Hampton. It was like having a personal painting that changed daily depending on the season and the weather.

We continued on, looped around over Hill Road and Ketchum Road, back through Hampton to Guthrie Road and ended up in Midland at the #UpToPar restaurant where we indulged in a tasty meal before heading home – full of good food, good conversation and good camaraderie.
