It’s a soggy spring Saturday in Sussex

Just because it’s a small town doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. There were barrel racers, baseballs, basketballs, bicycles, cattle penning, dog agility events and tennis – and that’s just in one area!

Despite the damp chill, every ball field in Princess Louise Park was busy with games being played and practices being held for teams of all ages.

The parking lots were full and friends, family members and general spectators lined the edges of every event venue.

Many camped on-site for the week-end in all manner of RVs, trailers, tents and campers.

Some went for a stroll, some stayed close to the action, and others sought shelter from the drizzle.

But everywhere I went I heard chatter, conversation and laughter. Everyone ignored the chill, the mud and wet feet and went on about their particular interest – while others watched and enjoyed the shows.

There was so very much going on it was hard to keep track! Down on Main Street riders had already set out for “Ellen’s Tour” bicycle rides. The last of the many cyclists were pedalling back to the finish area just as I headed home as well.

It was hard to know what to focus on at any given time.

Two boys were playing soccer in an empty field while two others were tossing a basketball at the net, sinking one so I could catch it with my camera and encourage them to keep at it.

All in all no one should ever say that “there’s nothing to do” in a small town like Sussex!

If you want something to do on your week-ends, go to a small town – they’re bustling with activity, even on a damp and dreary, soggy Saturday in spring.
