Two weeks into Spring

According to the calendar, we are two weeks into the spring season. OK. The weather is turbulent ranging from downright chilly to quite pleasant. When the sun shines you can feel its strength and warmth. When it doesn’t, there’s still a distinct chill in the air.

We are having some work done on the roof of our house so, to escape the racket, I headed out to gather some new images to play with. My first stop, of course, was “my” tree in Penobsquis.

Across the barren field, still hard from winter’s frost, it stands alone on the hilltop, a sentinel for all to enjoy. A closer look reveals that buds are beginning to form. There is hope!

After getting these images I headed off to see who or what might be inhabiting Mud Lake (Yes, that is its name!). Again, Mother Nature didn’t disappoint.

First there was a gathering of ducks paddling around, diving for morsels under the water. There was a bit of ice at the edges of the lake but it was, for the most part at least, open water.

A pair of geese were patrolling the far shore, perhaps seeking a nesting spot for this year’s crop of goslings. I will be back to check in a couple of weeks.

What would a small rural lake be without the requisite beaver lodge? From the size of it, I’d say there’s quite a family living there. Like an iceberg, we only see about a third that is visible above the water – there’s a mansion under there.

When late spring turns to summer Mud Lake will earn its name as the water evaporates leaving a shallow, muddy spot behind. But for now, the lake is full and there is runoff happening on one side.

Early spring is a promise of things yet to come. We are ready!
