My husband and I are so fortunate to live on the outskirts of a small town in southern New Brunswick, Canada. We are surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside while being moments away from town.
Two kilometres down the hill, past the hay and cornfields and a couple of subdivisions, there’s a lovely small park (#SullivanPark) that offers a picnic space and playground for family outings. It’s also the eastern access to the Sussex Walking (and biking) Trails. The Trails are a popular destination for people of all ages, from infants in prams, to serious joggers, folks walking their dogs and elderly folks out for a stroll.
Since I normally travel through there on my bike (a round trip of 11.5 km), I like to go early in the morning when there are few people using the Trails. As you’ll see in the video below, the Trails wind through the woods, along the shore of Trout Creek (which at this time is barely a trickle, despite the rain we’ve had), behind some housing developments and ending up at #PrincessLouisePark.
At the Park, there are all kinds of facilities for recreation. There’s a bandstand for entertainment, a picnic area, indoor skating rink, indoor and outdoor horseback riding rings for training and competitions, at #PrincessLouiseParkShowCentre (with 5 barns to house visiting horses), pickleball and tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a field for dog agility trials and so much more. There is no excuse to sit on one’s derriere at home on a nice day!
Early this morning, I passed two joggers, two people walking their dogs and one person just out for an early morning walk. It was so quiet through the trail although it’s disheartening to see how extremely low the water is in Trout Creek. At the crossroads by the ‘duck pond’ where the cattails are thick on the shore as the water has evaporated. I hardly heard any frogs at all and there are usually several there! I pedaled up by the off-leash dog park to check on the memorial trees we had planted for Joel’s daughter Samantha who died in 2022 and my son David who died in 2023. Despite the near drought conditions, both trees seem to be hanging on.
It’s a great way to start the day!
