Let’s talk celebration first and foremost. Today is Lucy’s 5th anniversary Gotcha Day with us. She’s gone from a nervous, shy, reticent creature to a warm, loving kitty. It took a while for her to learn to trust us, and she’s still reserved around strangers, but now she is less likely to vanish completely when we have visitors.
She also exerts control over her bigger, older brother, Harley. He pushes her buttons sometimes, but she can turn the tables quickly if she feels so inclined.
Adopted kitties offer boundless love. We have no regrets for inviting her into our home and we are grateful to S.O.S. – Save Our Strays, Sussex – for introducing us! They do a wonderful job of socializing the strays in their care as well as working with local veterinarians to ensure the cats are in optimal health before offering them for adoption.
Today should have been David and Linnea’s 19th wedding anniversary. What began with such hope ended in tragedy three years ago. I’m sure he is in her thoughts today, as the two of them are in mine.
It’s also “Orange Shirt Day” (Every Child Matters) or “Truth and Reconciliation Day” here in Canada. It’s a day set aside to remind us to stop and think about the good and the bad in our history and our treatment of the Indigenous people who were here first. This was, and is, their land that they chose to share with settlers. In turn, we chose to destroy families and incarcerate children in residential schools. Hopefully, today will remind us all that, as a nation, we need to do better going forward.
As September fades into the background, the sun has come out, the air is crisp and the fall foliage is beginning to show off here and there. I got out for a short bike ride to check out the leaves and found some brilliant trees, but not the wide vistas of colour yet. Looks like the “peak” of the season is still a bit away.
