To say that the weather so far this spring has been unstable would be a gross understatement. Last weekend I attended a birthday party for a friend. It was a barbecue – in the snow. Just as the BBQ heated up and the birthday man himself was heading out to earn his gifts, it began to snow. We all huddled inside while, under a golf umbrella, Adam manfully kept the coals hot. Aside from Mother Nature’s unwelcome intervention, it was a lovely party with good friends and excellent food.

Fast forward to today. I woke up to sunshine, a light breeze and distinct signs that spring really is here. The grass is long enough to require cutting, what were tiny buds last week are now forming leaves on tree branches.

The one noticeable anomaly is the lone tulip peeking through the shrubs at the side of our property. This is its third year making an appearance. The strange thing is, we didn’t plant it. I had a bunch of tulips in the house for decoration, and when they died, we chucked them (all cut flowers, no bulbs) into the bush in our makeshift compost pile. Each year since then one brave tulip rises up to show off her beauty!

Although there are lots of buds, bugs and other goodies for birds to eat at this time of year, I like to put a feeder out anyway so I can capture images of some of the visitors to our yard. Today I was lucky to see chickadees, sparrows and a female cardinal. Soon, there will be more, hopefully a male cardinal, and the hummingbirds are reported to be on the way.

The hostas are poking up through the ground, and everything is getting ready to burst into colour and all of Mother Nature’s glory.

Yay spring! I’ve been typing this to the sound of the lawn mower tidying up the yard for the first time this season. Can you tell I love sunshine and warmth?
