Today is the first Saturday in May. The sun is shining brightly, the wind is light, it’s 15+º and the world is waking up.!
I live in a rural town surrounded by farms – dairy farms, beef farms, and hay fields. As the sun finally gives the earth some warmth, the green grass is beginning to grow and gardens are waking up for the season.

Believe it or not, some cut tulips I bought two springs ago for some colour in the house were tossed out into the bushes at the end of our property. Voilà – they’ve grown up and there will be tulips emerging shortly! There are buds on the trees, birds flocking to our feeder for a bite of grain as they prepare to nest and lay eggs, and it’s the season of hope!

Another marker for the spring season is the annual #MQHA (Maritime Quarter Horse Association) Equine Review. People from across the province and beyond flock into our town to the #Princess Louise Park Show Centre to participate in the event. There are booths displaying every possible accoutrement for the horse owner, regardless of which discipline of showing they enjoy. And the food – the canteen is busy and there are other food vendors throughout the grounds. In both the indoor arena and the outside show ring there were demonstrations and training clinics that spectators could enjoy.
The parking lot was full and the aisles were crammed with people of all ages and dogs – so many dogs (horse people always have a dog or ten). Surprisingly, not a bark was heard as they all behaved so well while their people perused the new and gently used goods offered for sale.
The threat of torrential rainfall tomorrow no doubt spurred many to get out and attend today. It’s always fun to walk around and catch up with friends that haven’t been seen since last fall.

Welcome to spring and the prelude to show season in Sussex!
