Fun Activities for Families in Rural New Brunswick

I live in rural New Brunswick, Canada. Many people, particularly those from large metropolitan areas, wonder what we do for entertainment and to pass the time. My answer? Lots!

Traffic is usually light on our rural roads, so families can comfortably take their young ones out for a stroll and a snack.

In downtown Sussex, upwards of 300 cyclists were mounted up and ready to participate in “Ellen’s Tour de Sussex

Depending on your skill level and stamina, you could choose to ride 25km, 50km, 75 km, or 100km. It was a perfect day for it – neither too hot nor too cold and with a light breeze to keep riders comfortable.

Meanwhile, the main highway between Sussex and Hampton offered stunning views of the rolling hills of the Kennebecasis Valley, uninterrupted by much traffic.

Meanwhile, at The Hampton Riding Centre in Lakeside, a horse show was in full swing. Young competitors, supported by family and friends, rode into the show ring to demonstrate what they’d learned since last year’s event!

I drove home via the “back road” and stopped at the Apahoqui intersection to grab a few more pictures of the intrepid cyclists in Ellen’s Tour. Depending on the length of the ride, each group had its own route through rural Kings County. For many it was their first exposure to our beautiful countryside!

So, if anyone asks what there is to do in rural New Brunswick on a Saturday, just look around. The opportunities are endless. Now? I’m off to pedal my own bike for a little while.
