Summertime – and the living is…

Maybe “easy” isn’t the term, but it certainly is pleasant. Over the last few days, I’ve enjoyed visiting friends, admiring others’ gardens, biking through the nature trails, and today, stumbling upon a lovely musical interlude in Leodard’s Gate. Allow me to elaborate!

Sunday I dropped in for a visit with two friends. It was a lovely, sunny (but not unbearably hot) day so the three of us had a great time reminiscing about our competitive riding days, life experiences and, of course, gardening. Of the three, I am the least horticulturally inclined but I am always willing to learn from others. Alison’s newest landscaping efforts are bearing fruit – er – flowers with enthusiasm.

Dayna has landscaped her place beautifully as well. I, on the other hand, know my limitations. My floral display consists of some hanging baskets on the deck. I do have some rather healthy hostas, some black-eyed susans, and assorted shrubbery that are surviving my selective neglect.

Back at home, I was testing one of my lenses, so I coerced Lucy into modelling for me. She was bored.

There’s always something going on in our small town. Today, a trio of musicians from Saint John were on hand at Leonard’s Gate providing some musical entertainment in the middle of town. The group is called #TheCinnamonGirls and they are a talented crew for sure.

When I first arrived on scene, they were busy setting up their sound system and testing to make sure it would work. I was impressed as they worked together to figure it out and the end result was excellent.

Two- and four-legged spectators began to arrive to see what was going on. Both settled right in with their ‘people’ to watch and listen.

Fate has a funny way of throwing people together. I’ve been Facebook and Instagram ‘friends’ with Jennifer Power Scott for a few years now, but today was the first time we’d actually met in person. She and her group are all lovely and talented women who enjoy sharing their gifts with all audiences.

I asked Jennifer how the group got its name, The Cinnamon Girls. She said that they’d had a very good fellow musician friend who had died a few years ago. His nickname was Cinnamon, so the group’s name is a tribute to him. As we talked more, she mentioned that his name was Adrian. I said, “Thornton?”. It was. He and I had played in the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra eons ago when we were just getting started. It was amazing to have that connection. Six degrees of separation, right?

I stayed as long as I could and took a few more shots of the group as they were performing. I hope more people dropped in after I left because it was a wonderfully uplifting performance of some musical standbys and much more.

I hope your birthday was a great one, Jennifer. Happy Birthday! I’m glad you were celebrating in Sussex today.
