We live on the outskirts of Sussex, New Brunswic, Canada. It was known as the dairy capital of the province but with industrialization of a lot of farming, and concentration of farms from many into a few, that title is questionable.
Nonetheless, farming traditions run deep in the souls of the people here, and the 4-H organization is a huge contributor to that enthusiasm. This week, the Kings County Agricultural Fair is being held at the #PrincessLouiseParkShowCentre in the middle of town. The parking areas were full when I arrived there, along with some members of the #KennebecasisValleyCamera Club. We wandered through the barns checking out the displays. For some, it was an educational trip, learning about the animals, their care and showing. Some were intrigued by the children who, with absolutely no fear of the hooves on the huge draft horses, stood on ladders and stools helping to groom the Percherons, Belgians and Clydesdales in preparation for the show ring.
Preparing any animal for the show ring is a family affair. Horses, Cows, Pigs, Chickens or Bunnies – whatever – have to be bathed, groomed, polished and then kept clean for inspection by the judges.
It does my heart good to see such a huge turnout of supporters for this event. Everyone has their favourite part of the show but spectators enjoy roaming around taking it all in.
I did catch the end of the 4-horse hitch driving event. It takes great skill to maneuver these giant horses around the ring or even out on the road. It was a wonderful day to be there! I hope my colleagues from the Camera Club enjoyed it as much as I did.
