For early November, the weather today was unbelievable. It was sunny and WARM, a cozy 16º, and sunny. I couldn’t resist going for a walk on the town’s nature trail.

The birch trees have given up all of their foliage to serve as a carpet on the woodland floor. They shelter hibernating insects and in the spring, they break down to provide nourishment for the soil.

Dried grasses were dancing in the light breeze, their fronds rustling as I passed by.

It’s not easy to see, but there’s a dragonfly sunning itself on a leaf at the side of the path. I just happened to notice movement that, at first, I thought was a fluttering leaf. When I saw the dragonfly, I was delighted – they’re not easy to capture in a photograph, especially if you don’t have a long lens on your camera.

A few brightly coloured leaves must have been caught in the tangle of branches at the base of some trees. They haven’t blown down onto the ground, yet.

Most of the “cattails” have burst open to distribute their seeds across the marsh.

Some trees are desperately hanging onto their leaves. It adds a splash of colour to an otherwise brown tangle of twigs and branches.

The tamaracks are doing their best to hang on to their dry needles before the snow begins to fly.
On an almost summer-like day, it did my heart good to get out and walk in the sunshine, enjoy what Mother Nature had to offer, and to breathe in fresh air. Even in some of the marshy areas, the scent of decaying material isn’t unpleasant – we know it will bring new life in the spring.
It was a very good day.
