It won’t be long until those who celebrate enjoy Christmas Day – a gathering of friends and family for a feast and the exchange of gifts. It’s a quiet time at our house, but we still enjoy the season. Regardless of one’s religious beliefs (or lack thereof), there’s something about the season with its emphasis on peace and goodwill that appeals to all.
Now that it’s officially winter, we’ve put our bird feeders out on the deck along with a suet block in the trees at the edge of our property. Within mere moments the bluejays knew it was there and descended like a pack of wolves!

It took no time until they’d scarfed most of the sunflower seeds but they left the smaller grains for the chickadees who came next – grabbing a morsel and then flying off into the trees to enjoy the treat.
Imagine my surprise, though, when this fellow showed up to join in the fray!

We’ve never had a woodpecker venture onto the deck before!
I went out to run a few errands and I was delighted to discover some brave souls soaring over our town.

At 0ºC on the ground, I suspect it was even chillier up there – but they sailed merrily across the sky. I thought that perhaps Santa had come to town early to scout things out before the big night. Who knows?
Merry Christmas (or whatever you celebrate) to all!
